You may have heard about Doodle breeds, like Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Cockapoos, and others. But what is a Double Doodle dog breed?
In this post, you will learn about the Double Doodle’s origin, traits, and how best to take care of your Double Doodle dog.
What Is A Double Doodle Dog Breed?

A Double Doodle is not your typical dog hybrid. It is a hybrid of hybrids.
It being a combination of two Doodles is what got its name, ‘Double Doodle’. Despite it having the word ‘double’ in its name, it is actually a combination of three breeds.
Don’t be confused, it’s really simple to understand. Its parents: Labradoodle and Goldendoodle, have a common breed which is Poodle.
Hence, when you combine a Goldendoodle (from Golden Retrievers + Poodle) and a Labradoodle (Labrador Retrievers + Poodle), you get a Double Doodle. I told you it is easy!
Not to mention that these three breeds are among the most popular breeds around the world. Does that make their hybrid have twice their popularity (because ‘double’)?
Or maybe their popularity is more than twice their parents’? Let’s not get into the mathematics of it and leave it like this: they are irresistible!
Appearance

What makes Double Doodles irresistible is the fact that they are fluffy lovebugs. You can never go wrong with fluffy dogs or dogs for that matter.
However, in the case of Double Doodles, it is so easy to love them because they are so huggable and are therefore cuddly. Who needs them as cuddle buddies? Raise your hand with me!
They weigh around 50 to 80 pounds and their size ranges from medium to large. That means, they can pass off as weighted blankets when they sleep on top of you.
They are perfect teddy bear-like dogs! One cannot help but enjoy moments spent with them no matter the time of the day or the season.
You’ve been feeling down and stressed out? Give your Double Doodle some scratches and some belly rubs.
You’re in need of exercise? Walk and showcase your beautiful Double Doodle babies.
Whatever you want to do or need, your Double Doodles would be up for it. They are the dog embodiment of comfort.
What’s more is that they don’t shed as much. Their coats vary as well, they can be straight, wavy, or curly.
As the holy product of three breeds, their coat colors vary as well. They can be cream, tan, golden, black, white, or brown.
They commonly have a dark nose, dark button eyes, and floppy ears. Despite having dark eyes, they are known to have a sweet and gentle expression.
Moreover, they have long tails which are perfect for wagging! There is nothing in the world that could express excitement better than a dog’s tail-wagging.
They also have varied appearances in that you can end up with different-looking puppies even from the same litter. But we can be certain of this: they are effortlessly loveable.
Origin And Pedigree

Double Doodles being effortlessly loveable may have something to do with their origins. Don’t get me wrong, all dogs are loveable.
But combining Poodle, Golden Retriever, and Labrador Retrievers may just be a triple threat. Their extraordinary lineage just screams special for me.
Let me explain further and look back into the hybrids’ history a little bit. Hybrids have been introduced to showcase the special attributes of certain breeds.
More than special attributes, hybrids have lesser risk of breed-specific health issues. That does not mean they are invincible though.
For example, Double Doodles are still vulnerable to major medical issues such elbow-, retinal-, hip- and mitral valve dysplasia. Some of their other major concerns are: patellar luxation, diabetes, and vonWillebrand’s Disease.
Some of their minor concerns involve ear infections, cataracts, seborrhea, Addison’s disease, and hypothyroidism. They are occasionally diagnosed with epilepsy and Cushing’s disease as well.
Although, to be honest, these issues shouldn’t stop you from getting them. After all, you don’t have anything to worry about since they are relatively low maintenance.
Back to history, let’s focus on one of their hybrid parents: Labradoodle. Labradoodles were bred to combine the hypoallergenic coats of Poodles and the intelligence and best boy/girl nature of Labrador Retrievers.
They were bred as early as the 1980s by an Australian breeder to aid a blind woman and her husband with allergies. This sparked interest within North American and Australian breeders that some of the breeders’ breeding process cannot be considered healthy for the dogs anymore.
Next up is Goldendoodle. They were bred earlier than Labradoodles but their popularity soared because of the success of Labradoodles.
Both of these Doodle hybrids are well-known as family-friendly pets because of their hypoallergenic and low maintenance coats. They are also gentle and easygoing, no wonder they are popular among families!
Now onto the Double Doodle, because of their line of ever-gentle ancestry of hybrids they are coveted amongst dog owners despite them not being purebred. They are also called hybrid designer dogs.
Now, who doesn’t love such a glamorous-sounding title attached to your doggo? I mean, doesn’t ‘hybrid designer dog’ sound like royalty to you?
Part of royalty or otherwise, Double Doodle dogs are sought after because of their unique traits and their remarkable origin. Double may be a part of their name but they are actually one of a kind.
Personality And Temperament

No dog can ever do anything wrong. That’s just a universal fact.
Anyway, Double Doodles are no problem when it comes to their personality. Just like any dog breed, they are a bundle of sunshine and rainbows and everything right in this world.
They are highly social which is why they fit in with families. They are loving and intelligent like their ancestors, so they are easy to train.
They are really easy-going and are immediately comfortable with other animals, even kids. However, it is still advisable to keep an eye on them when they’re with kids because they may end up knocking down a toddler.
Moving on, let us talk about how they can never doubt other people. Their social and easy-going tendencies make them trust people easily, and in this case, you need not beware of the dog.
They are not threatening by nature but their ability to be trained easily makes them good assistants. They are adept in a variety of areas such as hunting, retrieving, search-and-rescue, and narcotics detection.
They are such exquisite dogs. I don’t even need to say more but there’s more to them so stay with me.
Exercise And Activity Level

I mentioned that they make good assistants but they can also be good partners. They can keep up with your outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, jogging, and biking.
They love their humans so much that they would demand you lots of attention. This is a dog we’re talking about, there’s no way you can reject them when they demand for attention.
Their coats may demand little to no maintenance but their energy level is the opposite. They need to have their daily long walks and engage in exercises that heighten their physical and mental abilities.
They need to walk roughly 14 miles per day and have an hour of exercise. This means that taking them for a walk would serve as your exercise as well, it’s a win-win situation!
Furthermore, they are more well-suited in an environment where they can bounce around. For the apartment owners who want to own Double Doodles, I’m lighting candles for you.
It is important to give them space to play as well as time for them to expend their energy. Otherwise, their pent up energy may make them misbehave.
